Today I had home made fresh angel hair pasta with a olive oil sauce flavored with capers, garlic, and anchovies. It was amazingly tasty.

Why yes, I did get a pasta machine. Why do you ask?

Fence Project, Part the Fourth

Last night we finished laying the corner flags for the Fence. I've got a game tonight, so tomorrow we'll lay the flags for the T-Posts and start designing the Gates. Its still going to be a long hard slog ahead of us, but we should be able to get it done. I hope.

In other news, I saw Indy 4: Awesome. :D

Also, last night I took 8 oz of hot country sausage, browned it, then sauteed some onions and garlic in the drippings, adding some spinach at the last minute and mixing in the sausage to make really tasty taco meat.

I served it with roasted carrots.
:D

It'll End in Tears, pt 3

This weekend was occupied by events, so it wasn't until today. Jess's sisters were up, and ended up helping us out. As a result, we got all the major clearing along the fence line completed. We're going to have to do some extra work along on side with a chain saw. technically, we're behind schedule, but I hope to catch up by working on the weekdays.

I smashed my finger. Its all yellow and broken looking. I was sawing up a sapling that was too big to use shears on, and when I got to the very end, I smashed the handle and the tree on either side of my index.

Once again, I get pansy wounds while doing stuff. :P

It Will End In Tears, pt 2: Return of the Fence

Last night we went to Home Depot and started buying tools. Ow, that was expensive.

We bought a 300' tape measure, some pruning sheers, twine, stakes, flagging, and then some garden stuff. Total: 120.00 bucks.

And we haven't even bought fencing yet. ;_;

God, I hope I'm not about to initiate the mother of all #@$-ups

This weekend, Jess and I are starting a project that should wrap up just in time for Nick and Thena to arrive for vacation. That project is the great Fencing of the Back Yard. Jess and I opted to do it ourselves, both for the price and because I think I need to tackle a project to prove I can actually competently build something.

So yeah, this will probably end in tears.

I've been doing a lot of reading, and Jess and I are going to be installing some 2 x 4" welded wire fencing using a mixture of wooden and metal posts. The wood posts will have wooden top rails, and mostly be the part visible from the road.

I'm breaking this up in to 4 weekends, starting on this weekend and ending on Jun 15.

The goals for this project are:

By May 26, Have the fence line staked and a general plan of attack in detail. Each post should have a stake place, with an orange or blue flag. Orange flags denote wooden posts, with blues denoting metal. Any trees in the way will be flagged and over the next week, I'll hire someone to come out and clear them, providing it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

By June 1, I want to have the post holes dug, and the posts up. I'll let the concrete for the wood posts cure of a week until June 8, when I want to mount the fencing. The following weekend I'm reserving for building and installing the gates.

I feel like I'm budgeting way too much time here, which makes me think that I might have just budgeted enough to get it done. I hope. We've already cleared the fence line along the cow pasture, but the back half of the lot is not cleared, and I know at least one tree will have to go there, so I better look up some tree removal prices.

Running a Mystery

Last night I ran L5R for our Wednesday Night, mostly Indie-Gaming crew. One of our regulars is in the End-Of-Semester Grind, so I stepped in with some L5R Action, since I ran it for Tyche's Games April 18 demo night.

Mysteries are tough games to run for GMs, because they rely on the audience often knowing things that the participants do not. Games like Gumshoe have attempted to mechanically recreate mystery shoes in different ways, but most accept that it is the GM's job to have a "correct" version of events for the PCs to discover. This invariably ends up in one of two ways: the correct hypothesis is arrived at within 5 minutes of the game start or the actual events are so arcane in relation to the clues that it becomes impossible for the players to make their case.

My solution draws heavily on Benjamin Baugh's original hack for Mutants and Masterminds Noir setting, so if you think this is brilliant, its mostly his idea. Keep in mind that the system I'm running is designed for L5R's Roll and Keep, but the philosophy can be adjusted to just about any system that allows for graduated successes.

The Mystery has 4 facets:

1. The Setup. This is the bumper for the Mystery, the first 3 minutes of the episode that set up the story and present the mystery the characters will solve. This is the only part where the GM actually has to come up with something. In my game, it was a Ninja attack on a dinner celebration welcoming the three PCs to the Daimyo's service. It seems someone poisoned the guards and allowed the Ninja into the Castle. The Daimyo tasked the new PCs with the uncovering of the culprit.

2. The Difficulty. This is the base difficulty of the mystery. In the case of the Ninja attack, I set the Difficulty at a TN 50. The Difficulty should be something rather high, above what a character would actually be able to accomplish.

3. The Duration: This is the time limit on the mystery. You must solve this before a certain date or time, or before an event takes place. If there is a duration, then there also must be an interval, or the amount of time it takes for a single scene to take place.

4. Clues. During each interval, the PC's have a chance to gather clues. Each player will have a chance to declare how their going to search for clues, and what clues they hope to find. I set the standard TN at 15, and each raise taken on the roll would provide an additional clue. Certain Skills used in clunky ways, such as using Acting in place of Etiquette when schmoozing the court, would of course, require extra raises in order to work, further increasing the difficulty.

Here's the important thing about clues: The PC's make them up. So when the PC asks to use his stealth to stake out the castle to see anything suspicious, if he succeeds, he will find something suspicious. If he took some raises, then he'll get more details, such as the gender of the suspect, or where they were going, or some other details that will eventually allow them to solve the crime.

As the PC's collect clues, each clue lowers the difficulty of the mystery, until someone wants to make an Accusation. In the game last night, the PC's collected the following clues:

Someone is Sneaking around the Castle at Night
It is a woman
The poison used to incapacitate the guards was Ghost Flower Mushroom Poison.
Once Plucked, the Ghost Flower Mushroom has only 12 hours of potency.
The Food was delivered by a new servant named Asuka.
Whoever plucked the Ghost Mushroom has unusually large Feet.
Ghost Flower mushrooms grow only under certain evergreens.

Each clue gave the Accuser a free raise to solve the mystery. When it was done, the PC's had used the clues to point to the Castle's Steward, Yogo Matsuda. There then followed an iaijutsu duel and a murtherin' great battle between the Crab PC and the dastardly villain.

The nice part about this was that the idea I originally had was rendered moot, and I didn't have to worry about keeping the PC's from barking up the wrong tree, because whatever tree the PC's eventually barked up, it was the right one.

I was very pleased with the way the system came out.

Side Dish!

Last night I made this:

1 lb snap beans, washed, snapped, and strung.
1/2 lb carrots, washed, peeled, and cut on the bias in 1/4" slices
2 cloves of good garlic
2 tsp of dried chili flakes
1 tbsp butter,
2 tbsp olive oil.

Take Carrots and beans, and drop in boiling water for longer than a shock, but short of cooking them. Wash in cold water to stop cooking process.

Over medium heat, melt butter and olive oil together. Drop in sliced garlic and chili flakes, tossing to cook for 2 - 3 minutes.

Add beans and carrots and finish cooking, serve immediately.

Good stuff.

Then serve.

I also baked bread tonight, but I'm not typing as I burned my hand on the bread pan, and now need to change my icepack.

My friend Mary is moving to Indianapolis today. She's family, and I miss her, despite only seeing her once every six months.

:|

We went down to "help" move, but just ended up visiting for a little while, and then went and ate Korean Barbeque at this place off Pleasant Hill Rd in Gwinett. It was good, but expensive; I think we should have only ordered 1 order for 2 people, as I was very, very stuffed at the end.

Good times.

Now, werk.

Recipe Blogging

Last night I made what I call Chicken with Mushroom Risotto Casserole, a kind of take on risotto, but based on my bachelor dish, Chicken'n'Rice.

Ingredients

2 Chicken Leg Quaters, skin removed

1 pkg of mushrooms, mixed and precut, pre-washed

2 cups short grain rice

4 cups chicken broth

1 medium yellow onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tbsp butter

Olive Oil

1. Season chicken legs with salt & pepper. Brown chicken legs in olive oil over high heat for 3 mins on each side.

2. Remove chicken from heat and turn down to low. Add butter, onion and garlic and sweat, scraping the fond off the pan.

3. Wash the rice and let it sit for 5 minutes while onions sweat. Add rice to onion and butter mixture and stir vigorously, coating rice in fat.

4. Cook rice over low heat for five minutes. Add chicken broth and bring heat up to high, bringing mixture to a boil while stirring often.

5. Add mushrooms, stir

6. Place chicken in pan amongst rice, cover and slide into 350 degree oven for 25 minutes.

The rice was creamy, but with a texture to it, and the chicken flavorful. I think it could stand the addition of more chicken or less rice (with appropriate reduction of onion, garlic, broth, and mushrooms) as we have A LOT more rice left over, which will become a side dish sometime later this week.

Comics Trawl, 2008 edition!

Two week review this time, as I picked up Last weeks comics on Tuesday, and this week's today. Light haul, all things considered. You can check it

**WEEK OF 2008/01/03**

This week, because of the holiday, was pushed back to Friday. Also, really light week. Let's see:

Jonah Hex 27. A story featuring a wild west version of Star Man, this one named for the profusion of sheriff's stars he wears on his chest. Overall, I find the beginning of the story quite jarring. The rest, however, is pure Hex-y goodness.

Uncanny X-Men 494: Messiah Complex Chapter Ten. Crap cover. Some twists. Brubaker's making this train wreck at least a little fun.

Annihilation Conquest 3 of 6. Adam Warlock! Star Lord! Rocket Racoon! Groot! Ultron! Oh My! Wait for the trade, if you must, but do read it. Its good.

Fantastic Four One Shot: Isla de la muerte! 1 of 1. Wow. This was a lot of fun. The art was distinctive, and the writing really captured the family nature of the First Family of Comics. Good stuff, and with a classic Four Villain. Check it out. I hope they do more with this team: Tom Beland and "Juan Doe".

**WEEK OF 2008/01/09**

The Goon 20. Oh Em Gee. How I've missed The Goon! And now its coming out as a monthly! Oh joy! Oh frabjous day! Plus, the letters page is like an advertisement for the Suicide Girls.

Nova 10. Awesome stuff here. I'm a little unhappy with Gamora, specifically the way she manages to end up as cheesecake through the book, but I'm otherwise glad to see her and Nova's relationship explained just a little better.

X-Factor 27: Messiah Complex Chapter Eleven. I'm Layla Mil- Madrox. I know stuff. I hope that this isn't the last of Layla, whom I consider one of the top characters to read the x-books for. Maybe she can join the New X-men? That would be boss.

Wolverine 61. Not a bad ending to the story arc, but I don't believe for an instant that Wolverine's actually lost his plot armor. I wish that we could see some New adventures, and meet new characters and villains, not just trot out the old tired past ones.

So there you have it.

In other news, I have new glasses. They are very, very flimsy. Yet, I can see Finally!

Comics Haul, Week of 12/26

Comics this week were delivered 12/28, and I picked mine up yesterday. Light week, holidays, etc. Like always, 2 lines about each can be found .

Thor #5. 5 Issues in, and we're finally starting to see some introduction of, I don't know, conflict here. Yay for decompression! Still, Olivier Copiel's art continues to make me happy, except for one panel where Thor looks like a retarded monkey. Nice nod to a 70's trope involving Doom, but note to JMS: It's supposed to happen in Issue #2, doomus.

Conan #47: The Hand of Nergal. Conan finds himself a mercenary in the employ of a city that has been ravaged by a strange evil. Workaday issue. I find myself missing Cary Nord.

New X-Men #45: Messiah Complex, Chapter 8. Nice joke about a 3/8ths Gripley. Incidently, is that a Pratchett original, and if so, Bravo Mr. Yost, or was Pratchett referencing something else in Reaper man? In which case, also Bravo, Mr. Yost. But it should tell you how I'm feeling about Messiah Complex that I've spent the entire mini-review talking about a single line.

X-men #206: Messiah Complex, Chapter 9. More build up. Its really hard to get excited about these events because I know that they're just going to build to a full head of steam and then fizzle into resolution in 2 pages of tendentious B.S. Sigh.

Pull Trawl Hawl.

So we didn't get to pick up comics last week, because I worked 63 hours. So Nyahh.

But that means that this week just packs all the more kickass in a can, right? right?

Battlestar Galactica: Origins Issue 1. That's it. I'm not getting any more BG comics. They're 3.50 and all I do is stuff 'em in my long box. I'll pick up something cool instead. Someone better give me something worthwhile to read.

Cable & Deadpool Issue 48. Please, please, please, I need my Deadpool. Wade in Ms. Marvel's get up is a hoot, as is the end of Cable in Time and Space story line. Only two more issues before its over, though. And that's just sad.

Nova Issue 9. Ain't it Cool News blurb on the cover: "The best Marvel ongoing series of the year." Now normally, I would say that given the quality of Marvel lately, well, no big surprise. Which is true -- but also grossly misleading. I've said it many times around the campfire: everything offworld in the Marvel Universe is kicking ass. This issue is no exception.

She-Hulk Issue 24. Wait. What the hell's going on here? I'm so confused. The story is great, Peter David doing a Hulk is yummy. But, er, I guess I'm missing something about her Law Firm? Usually, a writer gets to throw a blindside for an issue or so before backing up and talking about what happened, but damn, its been three issues! Still, solid artwork miles above the guy they had before (and no, I'm not going to go look up his name).

The Walking Dead Issue 45. I guess its just the build up to Issue 50, but I'm not really feeling Walking Dead. The first 6 were such an amazing ride through the Zombie movie concept. Lately tho, I'm left wondering "What's the point?" What is the story that Kirkman is telling here, except that in the apocolypse, shit happens? I had this same feeling with Invincible around issues 24 - 36, or whenever the OmniMan arc began, but still, I'm not feeling much of a pull out here.

Wolverine Issue 60. Er, why am I reading this again?

X-Factor Issue 26. Messiah Complex: Chapter 7. Ugh. Note to Marvel: If you are going to have a massive crossover event taking several months to finish, at least by chapter 7 make it feel like the story is going somewhere? This is a larger problem with decompression: the fact of serialization leads to a 6 issue arc having 5 issues of buildup and the sixth issue of climax resolution and denoument. This is not. cool.

Battlestar Galactica: Origins Issue 1. That's -- oh. Finished the pile.

Here's a list of comics I'd love to read, if the creators / distributors / retailers would be so kind as to GIVE IT TO ME!

PS-238. I may just go ahead any buy it twice. Once from akaihyo and then again whenever my retailer decides to get it for me.

Thor. Was this cancelled? Is someone late? Am I missing issues (again?) My god, I was loving it. Someone tell me what's up.

Goon. Its bimonthly, which always makes me panic before the next issue comes out. Its about time for another issue to come out, and I'm panicking that I'll miss it.

Goon: China Town TPB. I want this. Mucho.

Bleach: Has vol 21 come out yet?

Holy Schneikies

Wow. I'm tired.

Let's see. Last week, I got 58 hours, 8 of them from 9 - 5 (pm to am, not the other way around).

I've not had a day off in 9 days, I'm going to be earning overtime by about mid-afternoon tomorrow, my work email had 143 message today, I've sorted or solved some 300 work orders since Saturday.

But stuff is getting done. Things are looking better today than they did yesterday. I had the company Christmas party last night, where once again, our Christmas bonus turned out to be a $100 gift card, in company branded merch.

*sigh*

Comic Haul! 20071205

Here's something I'm thinking of inaugurating. My Weekly comics trawl. I'm not going to do reviews (well, not many), but just comments on what I picked up.

Annihilation Conquest 2 of 6. Once again, this proves that when Joe Q isn't paying attention, the house of ideas does its best work. Civil War? Meh, World War Hulk? Mega-meh. But those events that Joe doesn't seem to be excited about? Annihilation? Planet Hulk? Annihilation Conquest? Anything that happens away from Earth seems to be really awesome. This book is solid, as everything set forth starts to come together.

Invicible 46 and 47. I think Invincible has some of the best characters created since the silver age. Yes, there's sex and pathos and bawwwwwwwwww! But there's also awesome. And plot threads that slowly weave over hugey mcasslong times to resolve. If you haven't given it a chance, please, pick up the trades. Its so worth it. Esp. since I'm not digging the Walking Dead as much any more.

PvP Issue 37. Not much to say. PVP is on my pull b/c I like Scott Kurtz. This one has the strip where Robbie comes in asking Cole to give away 2.5 million for him. Brent takes a sip so he can spit take. Its brilliant.

Battlestar Gallactica: Season 0 Er, why do I buy this again?

Cable & Deadpool NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I don't want it to end! 3 more issues. ;_;

X-men, Uncanny X-Men 205 and 493, Chapters 5 and 6 of Messiah Complex. I'm reading these tomorrow. I like Brubaker. I hate crossover X-events, and the only X teams I care about are X-factor and New X-men. And since they're taking She-verine out of NXM to form Claw Factor, er, X-Factor, I'm not happy. I've got nothing to say on the story, however, since I'm saving it for tomorrow.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight Issue 9. The end of the Faith Arc. Savoring this one tomorrow.

Jonah Hex Issue 26. I love Hex. Saving reading this till tomorrow. Still, Hex.
